Social Security's New ID Verification Requirements: What Beneficiaries Need to Know
Social Security's New ID Verification Requirements: What Beneficiaries Need to Know
EFFECTIVE DATE: APRIL 14, 2025
The Social Security Administration (SSA) is implementing new identity verification procedures starting April 14, 2025. These changes aim to enhance security and prevent fraud related to Social Security benefits and direct deposit information. Here's what you need to know:
Who is affected?
You will need to verify your identity in person if:
- You are applying for Retirement, Survivors, or Auxiliary (Spouse or Child) benefits and cannot verify your identity online
- You want to change your direct deposit information and cannot do so online
You are exempt from in-person verification if:
- You are applying for Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI)
- You are applying for Medicare
- You are applying for Supplemental Security Income (SSI)
- You have an extreme dire-need situation (terminal cases or prisoner pre-release scenarios)
What current beneficiaries need to know:
- If you're already receiving benefits: You do not need to do anything if you're not changing your information. Your benefits will continue to be paid as scheduled.
- If you want to avoid in-person visits: Create a "my Social Security" account now at www.ssa.gov/myaccount to handle future transactions online.
- If you need to visit an office: Call 1-800-772-1213 to schedule an appointment.
Acceptable forms of ID for in-person verification:
Primary documents (must be unexpired):
- U.S. driver's license
- State-issued non-driver identification card
- U.S. passport or passport card
- U.S. military ID (active duty, retiree, National Guard, or dependent)
If you don't have these, other acceptable documents may include:
- Employee identification card with photo
- School identification card
- Health insurance card (not a Medicare card)
